Basketball culture and trading cards were made for each other, and shoe releases are where that culture gathers. On August 15, 2025, Skechers Basketball hosted an invitation-only influencer shoe-release event at Ballmatics / Uchenna Academy - with NBA guard Norman Powell in attendance - and Booth Empire ran a basketball trading card photo booth at its centre, producing 64 custom trading cards across the two-hour event.
The Brief
The event needed a branded physical takeaway that belonged in a basketball setting. An influencer shoe release is small by design - a limited guest list, a short window, a high expectation of polish - so the activation had to deliver a finished, collectible-quality output quickly, in artwork that matched the event’s black, orange and blue identity and carried Skechers Basketball logos.
The Card Artwork and Format
Booth Empire built the experience as a custom basketball trading-card activation. Card artwork was designed for the release: the event’s black, orange and blue palette, Skechers Basketball logos, and a layout that rendered each guest as the subject of a basketball card rather than the subject of an event photo.
Invited influencers were photographed on-site and received physical trading cards - a takeaway with an obvious second life. A basketball card is native content for a basketball audience; it photographs well, posts well, and sits naturally beside the shoe it was created to celebrate. Norman Powell’s presence at the event gave the card format an added resonance: guests were rendered in the visual language of the athletes headlining the release.
Built for a Two-Hour Window
Short events are unforgiving. With only two hours of operation, there was no slack for slow starts or mid-event adjustments - capture, card production and hand-off had to run at full quality from the first guest to the last.
Sixty-four finished physical cards in that window reflects a workflow tuned to a limited-capacity event: enough throughput to serve the room comfortably, with the production polish an influencer audience - and an attending NBA player - would expect.
The Numbers
- 64 custom trading cards produced
- Two hours of active operation
- Invitation-only influencer audience at Ballmatics / Uchenna Academy
- Norman Powell in attendance at the release
For a limited-capacity event, 64 finished physical cards - reported as cards produced rather than unique participants - represents strong engagement across the room, each one a branded, collectible-format piece of the release in a guest’s hands.
Why Guests Engaged
The format is the culture. Trading cards are already how basketball celebrates its people; putting guests on one required no explanation.
Event branding ran through the artwork. Black, orange and blue card designs with Skechers Basketball logos made every card unmistakably part of this release.
A physical output suited an intimate event. With a short guest list, a crafted physical takeaway lands harder than a digital file - it is proof of having been in the room.
Speed matched the schedule. A two-hour event demands a production pipeline that is warm from minute one, and this one was.
